I wrote this song back in 2005 as we were getting ready to head out on another long tour away from home. The lyrics and structure remain exactly as they were then, but with the addition of piano and strings. This is one of those songs that always seemed reverent to us in the band, and there was no need to change it. It felt right in it's simplicity, and it's straight forward structure seemed fitting. For the last 5 years, it has been our intention to close our next full length with this song, and I'm glad we saved it. It almost serves as a eulogy to the rest of the album, and also serves to bring it back around to where everything started with the concept of this album.
Kara Eubanks did a fantastic job interpreting my ideas for string parts and making them come to life. She and Jeffro thought I was crazy when I said I wanted the strings to "lift off like helium balloons" at the very end of the song, but she made it work.
The guitars used on this song were an American Tele through a Fender Twin and an Ibanez Ghostrider through a Peavy 5150... the classic culpa set up.
Since most of Sever Your Roots was tracked chronologically, the last thing that was laid to tape was the last vocal in the song.
