13. AN INSTRUMENT

Although "An Instrument" was composed musically in 2007, it was the last set of lyrics written for the album. As the album was seemingly taking forever to progress, the lyrics grew out of that frustration and the song became rather self-refferencial. When I brought the finished lyrics into the studio to record and I got through the first take, there was actually a pretty strong reaction from some people that the song could come off as pretentious and insulting. We were encouraged to rewrite some of the lyrics, but I felt as though the song was honest in it's approach and said exactly what I wanted to say and anything less would be dishonest.

We all agree that this song has some of the best production value of any of the tracks on the album. It was mixed impeccably and the tone and dynamics of it are perfect. Jeffro really did a stand out job on this one.

If you listen closely in the second verse, you can hear what sounds like a really dark shaker... it's actually our friend Danny's jar of popping corn. We found that a normal shaker was too bright and abrasive, so Jeffro and Joelly tried a few different things before they found the popcorn, which had this really nice, dark sound that just worked better.
