12. WHAT YOU CALL THOUGHT CONTROL, I CALL THOUGHT CONTROL

This was a song that I was always on the edge with. Everyone else in the band thought I was crazy for wanting to axe it, and admittedly I was. It wasn't until I rewrote the lyrics and adjusted the intro adding the "age is only age" part, that I felt comfortable with it going on the album. Now, it's collectively one of our favorite songs and I couldn't imagine the album without. Interestingly enough, it's the only full band song that Dustin doesn't appear on in any form, as we weren't sure that it was going to make the album, so we never had him write a guitar part.

Kara Eubanks and Kim Sutton completely nailed the string parts. Early on, Tristan and Joel had the idea to have this big, almost theatrical, orchestral arrangement during the end of this song. It took me a while to be convinced, as I was never that sold on this song, and I was generally a git about it, but they were right and the song totally works. The "round" string part at the end that follows the bass melody was completely Kara's idea, and live we now cover that with guitar.

This song was the first mix to really settle well with us, and really turned the tide in the mixing process. "Thought Control" became the standard by which we wanted all of the other songs to sound. In my opinion, it still has the most raw, powerful sound of any song on the album. The outro noises and violin samplings were all 100% Jeffro's creation.

You can hear call backs to lyrics from both "Ghosts" and "The Constant" throughout this song.
